Round 2.

Make a decision. Then execute.

Re-signed up for Ghost. ($108 hosting/yr)
Wrestled with getting custom domain hooked up.
Contacted support.
Problem fixed.
Started writing.

No messing around trying to customize anything. No adding any custom code or theme.

Now โœ and test the platform.


Paid Newsletter is one of the options I'm considering for this Zero to One Million project. By using Ghost now, I'm testing to find out if I it is a viable option.

The reasons I selected Ghost:

  1. Easy to use for sending out newsletters (free and paid)
  2. No need for a secondary email management system (e.g. MailChimp)
  3. Clear, simple interface, but is also customizable (themes marketplace or create your own)
  4. Clean code. (not bloated like WordPress)
  5. SEO capabilities (promising - we shall see)
  6. Doesn't charge a monthly % (unlike Substack or Patreon)

The second order of business today involved looking at the competition.


There are a couple of reasons to do competitive research.

  1. SEO - if your niche is highly competitive, it will take a lot of effort to start ranking high on Google search results.

A lot of effort may not be enough.

2. If there is no competition you may be barking at the wrong tree.

That is, if you are creating a product nobody knows about or there is no need for it, it can be a difficult and lengthy process to get your business off the ground - especially with bootstrapping.

It's doable, but when looking for giving myself the best possible chance of making it, I want to look for some competition, but not a crazy amount.

The problem with focusing on selecting a niche in my field - marketing, including SEO - is that the players in this field are experts at SEO with years of top rankings and big budgets. That means ranking for top-level keywords is going to be practically impossible. Competing against the top players may not be the best strategy.

Find out the level of competition, but don't become obsessed over it. Look for medium competition to move forward with your product/offer.

The way I choose to build the strategy is not the only way to do things. There are always many ways to reach a goal. Pick the path and tools that work for you. My goal is to be strategic and creative while making my chances of success as high as possible.
